Today all of the dancers had a very long day. Just yesterday our teachers (Anu, Lenisha, Arya and Veena) realized that we did not have enough time to learn all the things they planned to teach us. With only one full day of classes left they felt the need for Saturday classes, but that was impossible because we have already planned a full day of activities. Therefore we were forced to extend classes by 30 mins. each session. Though it may not seem like a long time, it does take a toll on ones legs when we are forced to remain in aramandalam (squatting position) for hours on end. So far we have learned 8 Mohiniyattam steps, 24 mudras (hand gestures) and the uses for 6 of those mudras. We have also been studying the theory of Mohiniyattam, for example the evolution of the instruments that are used in the performances, the meaning of all the ornaments that make up the costume, and the different themes in Mohiniyattam.
Today I had the pleasure of looking at my teacher's (Anu) photo album of some of the performances she has done. It was very exciting to see that only one year ago she was performing on the stage where we are practicing now. Our teachers have come a long way since then. They are now teaching and sharing their wisdom with us. They are all ready to start their studies to earn a P.h.d in Mohiniyattam theory and pursue their dancing further.
