In this course, students spend two weeks resident near Kerala Kalamandalam, a renowned center for traditional performing arts in the village of Cheruthuruthy, near the town of Thrissur in the southern Indian state of Kerala. At the turn of the 20th century, traditional arts of Kerala and many other Indian regions were on the verge of extinction. Kerala Kalamandalam was founded in 1930 to preserve Kerala's classical arts. Programs of instruction in music and/or dance, given by master teachers, are individualized for Ross students according to their interests and abilities.Students receive daily intensive, private instruction in either classical dance or music.Situated on the banks of the Nila River, the campus and its surroundings reflect the serene atmosphere that has nurtured these arts for centuries. To better understand the cultural context in which these traditional arts have developed and endured, students also make excursions to nearby temples, wildlife sanctuaries, and backwater villages. The group stays at the River Retreat, an ayurvedic resort near the university, where students have the opportunity to participate in yoga and other traditional Indian wellness practices.
There is a Student Art Festival at Guild Hall on March 20, 2:00 to 4:00. How about sharing some of what you are learning with the community at that venue?
